Director Reel
While, waiting for the last fantastic 3D series I worked on to be released, I’ve put together a fresh reel with some of the best projects I’ve worked over the past 6 years as a director. Hope you enjoy!
Rescue Bots Academy
This was an incredible project to be a part of. We had a commission of 104 11 minute episodes, which was certainly a daunting undertaking, but one that I was delighted to take on.
As this was a completely new series, based on already established characters from the transformers universe, we had the challenge of giving these characters a shiny new look that also aligned with the brand. I loved getting to know each of the many new characters so well and helping to shape their growth over the 2 seasons.
Working with the writers was a new part of the process for me and one that I enjoyed thoroughly. I think some of my favourite moments over the 3 year production was being in the writers’ room with all of the writers and the execs. There was an incredible sense of collaboration there as well as across the in house production teams.
We took a very hands on approach to the production and always endeavoured to make ourselves available to staff in order to assess any challenges that they felt needed our attention as quickly as possible. From scripts, boards and animatics, right up to animation and comp there was a real sense of camaraderie across the team and I really think this helped get the most out of the production.
Equestria Girls Summer Shorts
This was the perfect project to have as my first gig as a director. There were 10, 3-minute episodes that we produced over a space of about 6 months towards the end of 2016. Being such an established brand, one of the challenges we had, was being able to give it a fresh look while sticking to the already much-loved design of the series. Our team of talented artists did a fantastic job rising to this challenge.
Personally, I loved the challenges of trying to fit so much into a short space of time and getting to know these well-developed characters. There was so much content on them available, I had to commit to immersing myself in research on them all so as to be able to understand their drives and motivations better. I couldn’t have been more proud of the finished result and looking back now, I’m still blown away by the work put in by the team involved.
I put this reel together as any clips I found online contained a lot of content from another series of shorts that were not produced in Boulder Media.
My Little Pony:
Happy Birthday To You!
This was a really nice little piece I got to direct between finishing the Equestria Girls Summer Shorts and starting Rescue Bots Academy. There was a huge mantel to take on as My Little Pony is such an established and much-loved brand so we really wanted to ensure that we stayed true the characters and the MLP universe. It was a lot of fun to work on.
